Haematococcus pluvialis is a freshwater microalgae that is mainly found in small water bodies. It is one of the most important natural sources of astaxanthin which is a carotenoid responsible for the red hue of crustaceans that feed on these algae.
With the help of astaxanthin, Haematococcus pluvialis can survive even in extremely adverse conditions. When there is a lack of water, nutrients or overly intense sun rays, the algae that are actually green switch off their photosynthesis and go into resting mode. They produce large amounts of astaxanthin in order to protect themselves from UV light and oxidation.
