Leeches or Hirudotherapy:

Bloodletting is the most common medical practice from the first century AD until the nineteenth century. Bloodletting by leech became so popular that, in 1883, French medical professionals imported more than 40 million leeches from Russia for medical purposes!

Hirudin  ( a peptide that prevents coagulation ) that stops the blood from clotting. It has been discovered that the saliva  secreted by Hirudo Medicinalis has over 115 proteins with medical uses.

Apyrase – inhibits agregation of platelet.

Destabilase – dissolve the blood clots .

Theromacin and Theromyzin – kill bacteria.

Collagenase – Calin also with anesthetic effect. No wonder the bites from leechs are almost painless.

These bloodsucking worms that have been used in medicine as far back as 2500 years ago. In medieval era it was believed that an imbalance in the body fluids caused illness. Bloodsucking using leeches was one method used to restore balance.
