Why does the body need vitamin D?
Vitamin D is specifically known as a “bone vitamin”.
It plays an important role in the absorption and processing of calcium and phosphate.
Also in the mineralisation of the bone tissue. However, it has also become indispensable for a number of different metabolic processes and for immune defence.
Vitamin D supply
Nutrition only plays a subordinate role in supplying the body with vitamin D.
Around 80 to 90 percent of a person’s vitamin D needs forms through the conversion of sunrays (uvb rays) on the skin. However, this means that, depending on one’s skin type and the season.
A quarter of the body’s surface must be exposed to sunrays for 5 to 25 minutes a day during the sunny months of the year. The body can store the fat-soluble vitamin D and draw from these reserves in autumn and in winter.
What is vitamin “D3”?
There are various kinds of vitamin D compounds, the most important of which are vitamin D2 and vitamin D3.
Vitamin D2 is found in plants and in fungi. Vitamin D3 is found in foods of animal origin.
Also has the same form as is constituted in the human skin. The body converts both forms into the active hormone calcitriol.
Why is a combination of the vitamins D3, K2 and A beneficial?
Calcium processing involves all three vitamins. Vitamins D3 and A stimulate the production of certain proteins (e.g. osteocalcin), because transport this important mineral to the bones and teeth.
Without vitamin K, these proteins remain inactive. It is only vitamin K that converts them into a chemical form that enables them to bind calcium.
The main forms of vitamin K are vitamin K1 and vitamin K2. Only vitamin K2 has the function in bone metabolism. Both forms play a role in blood clotting. In cases of haemophilia or when simultaneously taking anticoagulants, it is therefore important to discuss the intake with your doctor or therapist.
